Pacman is out of Big D

The soap opera that has followed Adam “Pacman” Jones during his career seems to be far from over. After a mediocre NFL season on the field and yet another year filled with off field troubles, the Dallas Cowboys cut the problematic cornerback.

This has implications for the upcoming NFL Draft because the trade that brought Jones from the Tennessee Titans to the Cowboys had different selection scenarios.

The Titans got a fourth round pick from the Dallas Cowboys but lost a sixth-rounder next year.

Meanwhile the Cowboys will get a fifth-round pick in 2009 because of the suspension the player received after an October 7th altercation with his bodyguard. This part of the agreement between the teams shows the lack of confidence Dallas had on Pacman’s ability to stay away from trouble.

Twelve times before ever putting on a Dallas jersey, Jones had being involved on cases that needed police intervention plus he was arrested six other times.

After Monday Jones is officially a free agent. Only this time around the player is not coming out a stellar year.

He played in only nine NFL games, 9 as a starter with only 31 tackles and no interceptions. He averaged 4.5 yards and didn’t score a single touchdown on punt returns.

Now Pacman is looking for a new team, but it’s not for sure that there are teams behaving like “ghosts” and looking for Pacman. Right now it looks like Jones’ NFL career is one step closer to the end, despite all the Hall of Fame potential.

This is only one of the news that will hit center stage during this NFL off season.

When can we expect to see Allen Iverson staying put with a single team?

That’s what I and most NBA fans would like to know.

Allen Iverson has enjoyed of a very outstanding career at the NBA, but he has gone from team to team still trying to find where he really belongs.

His first team at the NBA was the Philadelphia 76ers, and during his time at Philly, Iverson immediately started to be seeing as one of the future all-stars. Everybody was buying Philly jerseys of Allen Iverson, even fans of other teams. Why? Well, because Iverson is a small player and people always enjoy supporting those they consider as having ‘less advantage’. Of course this is not the case of Iverson as everybody knows now what he’s capable of doing, but when he started, his little body was seeing as easy to smash by the big men at the NBA.

But I guess one of Iverson’s heroes must be Mugsy Buggs, one of the smallest players to ever have played at the NBA. He was noticeable smaller than Iverson, and in despite of that, was always seeing as a player with a great deal of talent to whom other players kept a great deal of respect.

And Iverson’s talent is surely far superior to that one of Mugsy, but his attitude certainly isn’t, and that’s what made him leave Philly to play for other teams like the Nuggets and currently the Pistons, a team that is expecting Iverson to grow some roots in order to make of him an emblem for the city, specially now that the Lions finished 0-16 at the NFL, one more reason to bring some more cheerful times to Detroit.

The Pistons were close to the championship last year, and with Iverson on the team, it is a fact that the coming NBA playoffs are going to be more than fun to watch.

Chargers trying to keep Rivers in the team

A.J. Smith, whom is the general manager for the San Diego NFL football team said on Tuesday that the team is ready to begin negotiations with Philip Rivers, their starting quarterback, hoping to agree to a long-term contract with the player.

Smith is hoping to retain Rivers, whom is a very skilled athlete and whom has been part of the team for a while now, they are expecting that the contract which is being offered to Rivers will be satisfactory enough for the QB, as his tenure with the team ends after the NFL 2009 season.

This current NFL season, Rivers became the main man for San Diego Chargers and the center of their offensive, and last season, he threw for 34 touchdowns and 4,009 yards which is enough to say that the young quarterback is a star in the rise, and a player the Chargers are more than happy to have on their roster.

But most importantly, he has led the team to the playoffs all 3 seasons with him as the starting quarterback and also, his touchdown-to-interception ratio is higher than the ones of Peyton Manning, Brett Favre and even Tom Brady.

So if you are to choose between keeping Tomlinson (whose salary might take up a big chunk of salary cap for the Chargers) and Rivers, I must say that the quarterback is always the main man on a team, and I don’t necessarily think that LaDainian Tomlinson, being a running back, would be more essential than Rivers when it comes to win a Super Bowl.

Final words: Keep Rivers, and let’s see if there is space for Tomlinson.

The Worst NFL team in 2008
Worst team in the NFL 2008

Worst team in the NFL 2008

We are only a few weeks away from the exciting Super Bowl, and we seem to be recapping on what was this current NFL season: who should play during the Super Bowl on February 1st? Who was the best NFL player of the season? Who was the worst team? For this one there no reason on waiting for the NFL season to be over:

Readers have been clear on their thoughts on which of the NFL teams had the worst game and this article is about who the readers believe was the worst NFL team during this football season.

The first runner up is sadly, the team with the best NFL cheerleaders: the very well known Dallas Cowboys, I wonder if maybe they get distracted with the hotties or something. Fans blame it on the coaches, even though Wade Philips is a great defensive coach the rest of the staff is definitely not doing its job.

Second runner up: The Kansas City Chiefs, I have to admit I was a little bit surprised with this one, until I thought it out deeply: In the NFL there is no room for mediocre people and it seems that this team is completely unmotivated; this was definitely not a good NFL season for the Chiefs at all.

Now, the team our readers have decided is the worst NFL team of the current football season is by far the Detroit Lions: They did not win a single game during the 2008 football season; week after week they delivered a poor game turning into a NFL record break where 0-16 loss, which has never happened before: Go Lions!!!

If you have anything to add, please be my guest and comment along…NFL season is almost over and now is the time to hear what fans have to say. My guess, no Detroit Lions fans will show up…

Football types: how to recognize the differences

Here is a small review on the different types of football all over the world:

Association football: This is commonly known as football or soccer, mostly played in Europe and Latin America.

Indoor football: It is basically the same as Association football, however, as the name establishes, it is played indoors. There are several types:

Five-a-side football: played throughout the world under various rules including:

  • FIFA approved Futsal which is played between two teams of five players each, one plays as a goalkeeper, and up to seven substitutes per team
  • Indoor soccer: A type of soccer played mostly in North America that was adapted to be played at an indoor arena such as a turf-covered hockey arena or skating rink.
  • Paralympic Football: A type of soccer modified to be played by athletes with a disability.
  • Beach soccer: Self explanatory this is football played on sand, commonly known as sand soccer.
  • Street football: Played informally, rules are set taking into consideration several varieties of football.
  • Keepie uppie: Also considered as a match up in some places, keepie uppie is the art of juggling with a football using feet, knees, chest, shoulders, and head.
  • Footbag: A kind of keepie uppie football played with a small bean bag or sand bag used as a ball in a number of keepie uppie variations, the most common being a hacky sack.
  • Freestyle Football: a modern style Keepie uppie. The players are called Freestylers are graded for their entertainment value and expression of skills. Requires lots of training and practice.

Soccer as you can see is also called football in most places around the world and the type of football played in North America is defined as American Football only, which is played in the NFL. In England the most common variation of football is Rugby.

NFL Champions History

To continue feeding the NFL fever I wanted to share with all of you NFL fans an interesting facts that shows the power, strength and spirit of true American Football. Let’s start by remembering that since 1970, the Super Bowl has served as the NFL championship game, prior to that merge, the National Football League Champion was determined by a team’s win-loss percentage, with ties omitted.

Since1934 the winning team for the NFL championship received the Ed Thorp Memorial Trophy, named like that in honor to a noted referee, rules expert, sporting goods dealer. The trophy was passed along from champion to champion each NFL season and each year the championship team’s name used to be inscribed on it along with a replica trophy for them to keep, however the original NFL championship trophy is now missing.

Among the most impressive NFL records of these championships:

· The Cleveland Browns’ Edwin “big play” Berry was the MVP for six straight appearances in the NFL championship game.

· The Green Bay Packers were the team with most NFL championships (12 in total) and won 3 straight championship games.

· In the 37 NFL Championship the teams from the Western Division / National / Western Conference won 25 of the games to the Eastern Division / American / Eastern Conference teams total of 12.

Regarding attendance to the NFL championship games, there are two very impressive dates:

  • Largest – 85,693 in 1955 at Los Angeles.
  • Smallest – 13,341 in 1941 at Chicago.

With all these fun facts, we would like to continue enjoying this year’s Super Bowl, NFL history is definitely being made while you are here reading this small article.

NFL Training Camps

All through out August most NFL teams were congregating to conduct the normal NFL training camps, although some teams do have Off Season Training sessions, most of the teams start theirs a few week before the NFL season starts. This is also a common practice among MLB teams. The off season sessions are held during the months of April, May, and June; also, new players to the NFL from mid-June to mid-July attend seminars and lectures by the NFL, all of these activities help new players and coaches to acclimate themselves to new teammates, and regular NFL players get a chance to practice and improve their game.

Off season trainings however, have been discussed since there have been complications in the past; NFL Training camps starting in late-July have proved to be dangerous since they are conducted in the middle of the summer and have caused several cases of dehydration. For example, in 2001, Minnesota Vikings player Korey Stringer died from medical condition based from dehydration and heatstroke, this situation prompted the NFL to change their training policies. The hot temperatures of the summer not only affect practices and performance but also NFL exhibition games.

It is known that heat-related illnesses are caused when an individual is subjected to extreme temperatures and humidity, and is unable to cool down. The NFL organization has been giving advice to coaches to prevent health issues among players such as allow 10-14 days for adjusting to warmer climate/temperatures, schedule practice during cooler times of day and schedule and enforce frequent drink breaks and rest periods during training camps. The NFL has also requested coaches to monitor high risk players: those with a prior history of heat illness, overweight or obese players, those with a medical history of gastrointestinal, diabetic, kidney, or heart problems; they have also recommended these NFL players wear net-type jerseys, avoid sweatshirts and remove helmets unless they are playing.

As we know, this NFL season all recommendations were followed and no further issues come up before the games. The 2008 NFL Season is the 89th season of the National Football League and the respective Super Bowl is expected to be played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida on February 1, 2009.

Super Bowl Champion and runner-up both lost first exhibition match

It seems none of the last NFL Super Bowl contenders started with the right foot, as both the Giants and the Patriots lost their own exhibition matches. NY fell against the Lions by 13-10 and New England saw their first defeat against the Baltimore Ravens.

So when it comes to NFL gambling, these first introductory football games are really important as you get to see what the current conditions of the teams are.

I think the Patriots are still a strong contender for the NFL championship, but now that Brett Favre has joined the Jets, the AFC East has suddenly turned tougher than in the previous pro football season where the Pats had it easy against NY and other weak teams like the Dolphins and the Bills.

On the other hand, the Giants were considered by critics as one of the weakest teams at the NFC East before winning this past Super Bowl, and now that division has turned into one of the most difficult of the NFL, with the almighty Cowboys, the Eagles and the Redskins, who have a renewed roster and have good chances of winning the NFC East.

So who will make it further? I would say the Patriots, but the Pats have played just one exhibition game and it might be just too early to talk on that matter…

Me and my NFL Futures

I’ve been wagering on NFL football for quite a while, and I have to say that betting on NFL futures is one of the things that I enjoy the most.

This is because you get to bet NFL football with a clear vision of what you think is coming ahead, and it doesn’t matter what happens near the date of the NFL football event on which you placed your bet on, the odds are fixed and won’t change, so let’s say that you are betting one of the weakest teams of the NFL to win the NFL championship, and since the payout is higher when you bet an underdog, if that team gets to win, you will surely collect more money for less investment.

Plus you can gather with friends and make predictions, and I’m sure everybody will have their own insights of what the coming NFL football season will be, so you can get more good opinions before laying any cash.

It’s just like at the beginning of the past NFL football season; a friend of mine placed a bet for the Giants to win the Super Bowl, and the NFL odds were not good, but he’s a big NY fan, so he was truly satisfied with the money he made when the Giants beat the Patriots at the past NFL Super Bowl.

Try some futures out; you’ll have a lot of fun during regular football season hoping for your predictions to come true!

NFL moves during the off season

NFL moves during the off season

There have been quite a few changes for the NFL during the past off season. Some players have accepted deals with different NFL teams and this will definitely set a difference on the upcoming NFL season. These are some of the changes we will be enjoying this coming season:

  • Jeremy Shockey, former New York Giants tight has moved to the New Orleans Saints. Shockey has earned four Pro Bowl selections in his career and received a Super Bowl ring with the Giants in the NFL Super Bowl XLII.
  • Originally drafted by the Miami Dolphins during the 1997 NFL Draft, Jason Taylor will be playing for the Redskins this season. Taylor was honored by CBS Sports’ James Brown with a JB Award, given annually to NFL players who have demonstrated a commitment to building better communities and stronger families.
  • Adam “Pacman” Jones will continue to make NFL history playing with the Dallas Cowboys.
  • While one Jones enters the Cowboys team, another Jones leaves: Julius Jones has left his position as Dallas’ running back to play for the Seattle Seahawks.
  • After four successful years with the Chicago Bears, wide receiver Bernard Berrian will continue his NFL career playing with the Minnesota Vikings.
  • Veteran player Warrick Dunn will now leave his running back position with the Falcons to move back to his first NFL team: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he played his first three seasons.
  • Receiver Javon Walker has left the Denver Broncos line up to continue on the NFL playing with the Oakland Raiders. Walker has also played for another awesome NFL team: Green Bay Packers.

There has been a few more changes on the NFL line ups, and most of the will start practicing this coming weeks to perform for their new teams. Make sure you keep track of all these changes in your NFL picks before the season starts in a few weeks.
