Lakers are looking strong… as always

The Los Angeles Lakers are already in the NBA playoffs. You don’t have to watch a game to know it. Just look at their statistics. They defeated the Dallas Mavericks for the sixth time in a row.

Not including their win against the Mavericks, they are basically the no. 1 team in the NBA. They have a record of 53-13 this NBA season; it’s the same one as the Cleveland Cavaliers. But what’s the difference between these two giant teams? I would have to say experience.

You have to be real for a moment, the Cavaliers basically depends on LeBron James. I’m not saying that the team is bad, but to win NBA championships you have to a have a group effort. James is the one who’s doing triple double’s, while others are just playing their positions. But, if you look at the Lakers statistics it’s a totally different situation.

You have guys like Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom who lead the team in different aspects, such as points, assists, rebounds and blocks. Every single aspect mentioned is managed by different teammates and that shows how much team work there is and it’s not just Kobe Bryant, like many would think. He’s been having a good season, but it just because he’s a good player doesn’t mean they only need him to win.

Going back to the Cavaliers side for a moment, James tries to be like Michael Jordan, because if you look back the Chicago Bulls won games with Jordan and when he left everything went crumbling down and bad. That looks like a similar situation with the Cavaliers, and it’s not supposed to be that way. They have gotten way better since LeBron started playing with them, but they haven’t reached gold due to the fact that they are not working as a team.

In the end, both are great teams, but the Lakers have the better hand of winning another NBA championship pretty soon, while the Cavaliers stick with their same strategy. I’d place my NBA bets on the Los Angeles Lakers for the NBA playoffs. They’re looking stronger than ever.

A “Nugget” suspended for a game

The Denver Nuggets small forward and all-star Carmelo Anthony has been suspended for game, due to “in-game transgression” against the Indiana Pacers this past Sunday.

Various sources say that Anthony refused to come out of the game in the third quarter when coach George Karl tried to remove him. Rex Chapman, vice president of player personnel, didn’t say the official reason of why he was suspended.

Many have suspected that it has to due with the technical foul he made after arguing about a non call on a layup he made.

This suspension led him to not play against the Detroit Pistons this Tuesday, but will play this Thursday against the Portland Trailblazers, back in Denver.

Anthony has already been suspended twice this NBA season. He sat out the first two games of the NBA season as punishment for his drunken driving arrest last spring while the Nuggets were jocking for position in the NBA playoffs.

In the 2006-07 NBA season, Anthony got suspended for 15 games during a game with the New York Knicks, in which he punched Mardy Collins. Around ten players were ejected and seven suspended, with Anthony receiving the stiffest punishment from NBA commissioner David Stern.

Right now, Anthony is the second Denver sports star to get suspended in the past few days. Denver Broncos Brandon Marshall got into a fight with his fiancé in Atlanta, being suspended for not following the NFL code of conduct.

The Celtics, stronger than ever

The Celtics started this NBA season greatly, but then ran with some bad luck and lost a series of games in a row, so, are they still a team that is balanced and can still win the big game? My response is yes, sure they can.

The Celtics are a team that fought with all they had last year and came up with a championship that was more than well deserved by each one of the Celtics players who contributed to such great effort.

And it’s because of such reason, that you can never doubt a team like the Boston Celtics, even more when they have an all-star roster including players like Paul Pierce, who found two excellent partners in Ray Allen and the always-emotional Kevin Garnett.

Those three guys were dealing with frustration before last NBA season started, any of them had won a championship ring before in despite of had being all-stars most of their careers, and they knew that they would have to struggle with each other’s egos in order to create a good team chemistry.

Well, they did fantastic, and they proved (just as Kobe Bryant is doing now) than when a team is truly working as a team, good things happen.

So with such background, there is no doubt that the Celtics are a tough team that is hard to be thrown just by a series of continuous losses, they are one of the most respected franchises in NBA history, and currently are also one of the power houses of the league, that is why I believe they have the mentality to get back on track and have the chance to put a step on the final’s court this year also.

Lastly, I would say that the only team that I see with the spirit of the Celtics is the Lakers, because, as I said before, Kobe Bryant is more of a leader now than ever, and with the talent he displays, there’s no doubt his team mates keep him a great deal of respect, so it would be interested if the NBA finals repeat as last year’s with both team waiting to conquer the title.

Mourning says good bye to NBA

Basketball star Alonzo Mourning says he will not be continuing playing anymore and retired from the NBA last Thursday at a press conference. Mourning has unfortunately been on the bench since December 19, 2007, after he suffered a torn patella tendon in his right knee and a torn quadriceps in the same leg while playing against Atlanta Hawks.

Alonzo Mourning is a seven-time NBA All-Star and two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and was apparently working out at the Miami Heat’s complex and considering trying another comeback, yet he decided to call it quits and leave the National Basketball Association with a his head up high.

Mourning established that he made the decision of retiring from the NBA because of his competitive nature and his all-out style of play on the floor could put his health in jeopardy again so it will better for him to leave the National Basketball Association.

During his career, Alonzo Mourning played for 15 NBA seasons with the Miami Heat, New Jersey Nets and the Charlotte Hornets. Mourning averaged 17.1 points and 8.5 rebounds. He was averaging 6.0 points and 3.7 rebounds in 25 games last NBA season before the injury.

NBA fans and especially Miami Heat fans were hopeful that Alonzo Mourning was going to be back since he previously did so in 2003 he made a comeback from a kidney transplant. Although his doctors advised him not to play, a few months ago he said his knee was stronger than ever, but apparently he decided to listen to his doctors and leave the NBA in good terms. We certainly wish he could still amaze us in another NBA season but, if his health is at risk we support Mourning’s decision and wish him the best.

NBA season so far: the current best players

We are in the middle of the NBA season, so it is time to review what has happened in pro basketball so far, and we are going to check on some awards we might give to NBA players as if the season was over now.

Let’s begin with the most sought-after NBA award: the MVP, if the season was over now, I would have to say that Lebron James is the player that deserves this award more than anybody else. He’s scoring 27 points per game and is showing that he can have a ‘Michael Jordan’ year with elevation in the quality of his game.

Now with the comeback player: In this case I have decided to pick Dwayne Wade. A few reasons can validate my decision, starting with his current performance, as he’s scoring 29 points per game (it seems like his participation in Beijing has elevated his status to elite back again), and mostly because he spent most of the 2008 NBA season on the bench and is also currently third in steals on the league.

Rookie of the year: A clear winner here: Derrick Rose from the Chicago Bulls. His performance with the Bulls has been outstanding and has exceeded most expectations, and if Chicago can make it to the playoffs on Rose’s rookie year, then things are looking much brighter for him in the coming season.

Defensive player: Marcus Camby of the Clippers. No matter what the current Lakers situation is, Camby is undoubtedly the best defender in the NBA, as he currently leads the league in rebounds and is just second to Dwight Howard in blocks: The light in the dark concerning the Clippers.

And finally, the most improved player. In this case I will have to go with Andrea Bargnani. Yes, many would say that Devin Harris has been more impressive, but the reality is that Bargnani’s progression is outstanding, proof of that is the Raptors’ last nine games where he has scored 17 or more points. He has also jumped as the perfect replacement in Jermaine O’Neal’s vacancy.
