Althea Gibson – breaking racial barriers in professional sports

Just as Jackie Robinson did in baseball, Althea Gibson did in professional Tennis.

Althea broke the racial barriers of her time and became the first African-American woman to play professionally.

Everything started when Gibson was playing paddleball at the streets of Harlem and was observed by a coach of the PAL (Police Athletic League) who encouraged her to play Tennis. She and coach Buddy Walker headed to a near public Tennis facility where she immediately started to show her abilities by defeating each one of her opponents.

In 1946, and with sponsorship, she moved to North Carolina for intensive training, and by the age of 20, she won the first of her 10 consecutive national championships run by the American Tennis Association.

Then, she would go on a route that brought her a series of Grand Slams, including 5 in singles (one in France, two in Wimbledon and two in the USA), and 6 in doubles (one in Australia, one in France, three in Wimbledon and one in the USA).

Truly an achiever, Althea Gibson will always be regarded as one of the jewels of Tennis worldwide.
